November 14, 2017: Michael Rickey AF6FB: Digitial Mobile Radio (DMR)

We've not had an end-of-year club dinner for several years, so this year. . . we'll gather at 7 p.m. at a new restaurant in Glendale: Central Grille, 801 N. Central Ave, Glendale, CA 91203. PLEASE NOTE: As of November 13, the dinner/meeting is fully subscribed with intending attendees.

After dinner we have a presentation by Michael Rickey on Digital Mobile Radio (DMR). He will discuss the origin of DMR and the standards body that maintains the specification (brief overview). He goes on to discuss some of the features available on DMR, and compares them with other modes. The next topic is operating practices, covering DMR-specific lingo, use of talkgroups and timeslots, and maintaining your code plug. The final section discusses some of the more popular radios and hotspots.

Michael AF6FB has been a licensed ham since 1982, initially working with MESAC (Costa Mesa, CA) on special events and helping during emergency situations. This was followed by many years of just being a ham. In 1995 he joined MARC, the Motorcycling Amateur Radio Club, supporting bicycle charity rides; he continues with this club today. In the early 2000's he became interested in HF and upgraded his license to General in 2002, then to Extra in 2007. Today, Michael works with the PAPA System, helping to build multi-mode repeaters, continues working with MARC, and continues learning new things about amateur radio. You can find more about Michael on http://af6fb.net and by listening to the DMR net on Mondays at 20:00 on California 3106.

This meeting is being held early in the month to avoid the holiday week, and is in place of our usual monthly meeting.
