November 22, 2016: Jim Walls K6CCC: Listening to scanners and how to program them

Jim Walls K6CCC has been an amateur radio operator since 1977.  Professionally, he has been running large Motorola trunked radio systems for the past 23 years.  Starting in 1993, he started daily operation of the Southern California Edison 900 MHz SmartZone system, and since 2004 has run daily operations on the Interagency Communications Interoperability System – these days commonly known of as the I-C-I System.  He bought his first scanner about 35 years ago.  For the last 15 years or so ago, he has been the owner of the SoCalScan E-Mail list on Yahoo! Groups.

Jim will be speaking on the subject of scanners.  But first, in order to understand how to use a scanner, you need to understand a few things about how radio systems work. To that end he will briefly explain a few of the trunked and digital radio system types. Then he’ll get into some of the concepts of scanner programming.
