May 23, 2023: Nancee Darline K8NBD, Anne Nowlin K6ALH, and Doug Clark WA6IFY: Local ham radio service opportunities

PLEASE NOTE: Because our in-person meeting location is unavailable, this presentation will be webcast on the internet. See the IMPORTANT NOTE at the top of this page.

The Altadena Local Emergency Radio Team (ALERT) started in November, 2012, with their first monthly radio communications meeting. Over the years since, they’ve grown to a group of about 25 members, with a weekly Monday night net on our beloved TELCO repeater. Each year, ALERT leads or supports radio communications for many community events, such as AC100 Cloudburst Checkpoint, Baker-to-Vegas, Shakeout, PUSD Science Fest, National Night Out, Concerts in the Park, Christmas Tree Lane, Pasadena Half-Marathon, Walk-for-Kids, and more.

Three ALERT members will discuss the history and purpose of ALERT, the ins and outs of planning radio support for a community event and share their experiences at some of the events they’ve supported.

The founder of ALERT, Nancee Darling, K8NBD, was licensed in 2012 and persevered to earn her Extra class ticket. At Nancee’s encouragement, Anne Nowlin, K6ALH, was licensed in 2022, and has earned General Class. Doug Clark, WA6IFY, was first licensed in the early 70’s as WN6IFY but was inactive for many years until getting involved with PRC and ALERT.
