January 23, 2018: Tom Mikkelsen WA0POD: Ham radio satellites and “A Fleet of FM Arrivals!”
Join us Tuesday, January 23rd, 2018, for a presentation on FM Amateur Radio Satellites. The focus will be on working the new AMSAT AO-91, launched on November 18, 2017, as well as the fleet of new FM satellites arriving in 2018. We will learn more about the ease of use including access on AO-91 with tools and radios almost every ham can use to listen to and work the new FM birds. We will also take a look into the future for AMSAT’s next phase of higher orbit satellites as well as the possibility of geostationary satellites for amateur use.
Tom Mikkelsen is a senior engineering/operations executive focused on Media and Entertainment. He works for National TeleConsultants in Glendale CA and is actively involved with AT&T and DirecTV in a variety of technology projects as well as other major network and cable providers. He has held senior technology leadership positions with organizations such as Encompass Digital Media, one of the largest international network service providers, Qualcomm Inc., Starz Encore, Comcast/AT&T/TCI, as well as Vyvx/Cycle Sat. His career also spans broadcast technology management experience with such prominent firms as the Journal Broadcast Group, Tribune Broadcasting (WGN-TV), and Motorola Communications.
Tom has a BSE degree and holds a FCC General Class Commercial License. He is a Life SMPTE Fellow and is active with the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), as well as the Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE), the Society of Cable and Television Engineers (SCTE), the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), Society of Satellite Professionals International (SSPI), and the Society of Television Engineers (STE). As you know he is also an Advanced Class Amateur Licensee WAØPOD and has been licensed since 1963.
